Well You Needn’t
My old friend Billy Herman came up with the first perfect lyric line to this Thelonious Monk favorite. In early performances I found that the juxtaposition of these lyrics to Thelonious Monk’s tune, brought adolescent-type-anger to the surface, so I re-arranged it to a Metal/Punk setting, turning triplets to duplets, which seemed to further facilitate the fury. The humanity! I’ve been playing variations of this arrangement since the early 1980s. Eventually My Hero and I reintegrated some of the jazzy feel into this arrangement’s chewy center.
Well You Needn’t – Lyrics
You said that you would but you didn’t
You said that you could but you couldn’t
Then you told me you had but you hadn’t
Well you needn’t
Well you needn’t
You said you would
You said you would
You said you could
You said you could
And well you should
It would be good
bu you did not
because you can’t
so I won’t ask you again
You said that you would but you didn’t
You said that you could but you couldn’t
Then you told me you had but you hadn’t
Well you needn’t
Well you needn’t
Well you needn’t
Well you needn’t
Well
you
needn’t
